چکیده

Ultra-thin Ag films on the Au(1 1 1) surface were prepared via overpotential deposition (OPD) in the presence of Pb2þ ions. By carrying out repetitive Pb adlayer underpotential deposition (UPD) and stripping cycles during Ag bulk deposition, the two-dimensional growth of Ag films was significantly enhanced in high OPD. The Ag monolayer sample was made by comparing the voltammetry curves, in which the signatures for Pb adlayer UPD on Au(1 1 1) changed to that on Ag(1 1 1). As demonstrated by the X-ray specular reflectivity measurements, nearly complete monolayer and bilayer films can be made with optimized deposition procedures. On subatomic scale, however, we found that these films have significant higher root-mean-square displacement amplitudes than those underpotentially deposited Ag monolayer and bilayer on either Au(1 1 1) or Pt(1 1 1). 2003 Elsevier B.V. Electrodeposition of epitaxial Cu(111) thin films on Au(111) using defect-mediated growth.

Thin films of various materials are deposited onto the surface of bulk materials (substrates) to achieve properties unattainable in the substrates alone.1 Among the various types of thin films, those with single crystal quality and in registry with the crystallographic orientation of the substrate are called epitaxial films. They have enormous importance especially in the semiconductor industry...

Electrodeposition of Ag and Pd on a Reconstructed Au(111) Electrode Surface Studied by In situ Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Electrochemical deposition of Ag and potential-induced structural change of the deposited Ag layer on a 23 3  reconstructed surface of Au(111) electrode were followed by in situ scanning tunneling microscope (STM). A uniform Ag monolayer was formed on a reconstructed Au(111) surface in a 50 mM H2SO4 solution at +0.3 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) after adding a solution containing Ag2SO4 so that the concentr...

High resolution electrochemical STM: New structural results for underpotentially deposited Cu on Au(111) in acid sulfate solution

Adsorption of sulfate assists Cu monolayer underpotential deposition (upd) on Au(111) in a unique way, rendering two distinct structural stages: (i) formation of a low-density Cu phase at coverage of 2/3 ML known as the ffiffiffi 3 p ffiffiffi 3 p R30 or honeycomb phase; (ii) formation of a complete monolayer, i.e., Cu-(1 · 1) phase pseudomorphic with respect to underlying Au(111) substrate. The underpotential deposition(UPD) phenomena is very interesting not only because of its fundamental importance but also due to its noticeable growing impact on the material science. The amazing possibility of control the deposition process down to monolayer results in new kind of materials with different properties than bulk ones embracing they catalytic, electronic or magnetic properties.
